the carbs are rebuilt brand new spark plugs good gas, once its running it runs beautifully no problems idols fine runs perfect at high rpms but i can crank it over for five minutes and nothing..i need to spray the carbs with carb cleaner to start it. could it be the timing? i dont think it would be considering it runs so perfectly once its started and starts up real easy when warm. any ideas?

Be sure to pump the primer bulb till really firm.

Might want to consider rebuilding the fuel pump. Its inexpensive and simple to do.

I have a 1971 Merc 800 and its hard to start when cold as well but it always does start. Prime, prime, prime, choke choke choke and it should go. Almost impossible to flood these motors.
