My trusted friends at iboat:
I am having a problem with my 3.7L Mercruiser 190hp, when I turn the key, nothing happens. If I wiggle the gear shifter the starter will engage, but some times a huge ark will come from what I believe is called the "Switch plate". I found the part on basicpower.com. My question is can I clean the connectors on the old part and maybe fix the problem, or do I need to buy the new one. I am very new to I/o motors, and a little skeptical about just removing the part without some advice..

Best advice I can give ya is get a manual..
You obviously have a wiring issue..

There is a HOT wire that comes off the Nuetral safety switch to the ignition..
Sounds like that is wired arse backwards?

Ayuh,... I'd say you've got Bigger wiring Problems,...
The shift switch plate has absolutely Nothing to do with Starting....
It only controls the igntion circuit when Shifting...

Starting is covered by the Neutral Safety Switch in the controller....

I am also having a problem with a loss of fire to the plugs, it is not totally gone, just very week, and some times the motor wont start. I wonder if the "shift switch plate" is causing this... as far as the ark and the wiggling of the shifter to engage the starter, I will get a wiring diagram as suggested

You are 100% correct my friend. I am in salt water, NE Florida to be exact. The boat is a twin engine,, the starboard motor runs perfect, but this port motor Is rely showing it?s *****. So would you suggest changing the Switch Plate, or cleaning all connections, and giving it another try??
