Re: Composite versus wood
Generally speaking, it aint the material so much as it is the design and workmanship. By design I mean designing for adequate airflow or sealing against water and air intrusion without reducing structural integrity or adding extra weight. Comp, like wood, can be damaged by poor air circ and/or water intrusion.
Workmanship can significantly affect the lifespan of the structure. The biggest causes of a shortened life is the the wrong fastener (or just too many) and a sloppy fit. There is no substitute for quality workmanship. Epoxy, et al, only briges a gap so far and for so long. Skill, not materials, is the deciding factor. Which material is a better match to your skill set and wallet?
Also, do your homework. Some comp materials are life limited due to UV exposure and other environmental concerns. And don't mix materials or manufacterers. Avoid, as example, using styrene over ester resin.
