Default Tach Installation

I bought this boat with the wiring hanging everywhere. The boat runs good but would like to redo the wiring in it. It has a tach in the dash board but it is not connected to anything and Im not sure where it hooks into the engine at to get its readings. The motor is a 181 3.0l.... Any ideas?

Default Re: Tach Installation

It doesn't actually hook directly to the engine. The wires from the dash will go back to the big plug on the motor. Then on the motor, the wires from that big plug go to the various things on the engine. (Mercruiser and VP engines are sort of Plug and Play. If you can plug in the big plug to them, they'll work in any boat.)
Tachometer wires should be on the backside of the distributor. And I think one will be purple.
