battery problem on 1975 70hp johnson

alright guys i recently put a 1975 70 hp johnson that had been sitting in my dads barn since about 1992 on a 17 foot caravelle. i did all the normal things replaced the plugs drained and put new greece in the lower unit and it started right up and seemed to be running fine but every time i get above 3000 rpm's the battery meter starts red lining. over charging. and then when i push the horn button the meter will drop all the way to the under charged line. ive run out of ideas hope someone can help. thanks

well the rectifer charges the battery. gauge could be bad also, check with multimeter.

Its a non regulated rectifier so you'd expect the volts to go quite high. Pressing the horn button puts some load on and drops the volts. I quess they soon rise again though.

As TD suggests well worth checking the volt meter reading. They are not precision instruments so great accuracy is not to be expected.

You battery may be not so good as well.

thanks guys just tested it it ended up being the rectifier
