Rings '82 johnson v6

What is the easiest way to inspect and replace the rings if needed? Can you simply remove the cylinder head cover, or do I need to pull the entire head off of the case?

Do a compression test; if that fails, remove the cylinder heads, bypass covers and exhaust covers so that you can see that all of the rings are in place. If the rings are broken or missing, the entire engine will have to be removed and disassembled.
