Use vintage gasket set or new gasket set?

I have recently started to redo a 1954 Evinrude 7.5HP Fleetwin model 7514. I found an origional gasket set for the engine and am wondering if anyone has some input. Is the original gasket set the same as the new OMC version? Or has there been some improvement? Thanks for the help.

I would go for the new ones. The old set is probably dried up and shrunk by now....

Personally I'd use the old kit. But make sure they're still usable. If you don't use it, I'll take it :)

Given the choice and all things equal, such as price, I'd take the old kit too. Those old gaskets had asbestos in them, making them tougher and more heat resistant. Yeah, yeah, I know, now we'll hear the outcry from the people that think you are going to breathe the dang thing.

Thanks for the quick replies. On the old set should I primarily look for cracks to tell if they are usable? And since I am new at this do i need to do anything to the gaskets when I put them in? ie: use a sealer or just use some oil on them. Thanks again for the help.

The gaskets go on dry. Flex the gasket slightly with it next to your ear. Listen for crackling or crunching noises. If it is quiet is is fine. Make sure the surfaces the gasket seals is absolutely clean before reassembly.
