Looks like algae in gasoline fuel tank

We had problems with the gas clogging our fuel filter. We drained the fuel tank and our gas was orange. At the bottom of the tank it looks like brownish-orangish algae or fungi or bacteria. When it dries up though, it turns white - into a powdery substance. Does anyone know what this could be?

Thanks!

phase separation from ethanol plus algae. Use Startron and read all about fuel care at the many many posts on this topic here and under general engines.
