I purchased a boat that came with a Mariner 9.9 HP outboard, which ran decent for the first few months. It would die after running hard for about 15 minutes, which I then had to let it sit about 20-30 minutes before it would restart. It didn't seem like the filter was getting any fuel so I took the filter off and ran the gas hose straight to the motor "temporarily". This worked fine for a few weeks and may not have anything to do with the current problem, but I can't hardly get the motor to crank. After a 1/2 hour of choking and pulling, it will start and run while in nuetral, but when I put it in reverse or forward it will run at half the power and die a few seconds later.

Anybody else have this problem or have any ideas?

Most likely plugged jets in carb. Filter was clogged and when you bypassed it all the crud went into carb.
