I was wondering what length control cables i would need for a 1974 Glastron V156. I recently purschased a 1978 Mercury 700 70 hp motor and it didnt have any controls. Also wondering if i buy a control and it has longer cables if i can just loop them and tie them to my desired length. Any info would be extremly helpful new to the boating world.

Thanks, Brandyn

Re: Control Cables

Use a garden hose or something similar to gauge the cable length. Run the hose from the control box location down the side of the boat and out to where the motor will be on the transom...mark the hose, lay it flat and measure it with a tape measure. I always add a foot to that measurement, just to be sure. Avoid S-curves in control cables...not a good thing.

Remember that the outboard has to turn in both directions so it is essential that you have a little extra length for those loops. Look at another boat to see how it's done.
