Exclamation Evinrude 6hp 1976 shaft removal

Hi - I have a 6hp Evinrude 1976 model. I have removed the lower case and discovered that the shaft has snapped where the impeller pin goes in. I have removed the water pump assembly but am unable to remove the shaft. Do I need to do anything more or should it just slide out? Many thanks.

There is a pin through the shaft near the top which has to be aligned with a slot in in the housing before the shaft can be removed.

Turn the flywheel slowly while pulling on the shaft and eventually you should find the point at which it will come way.

See the diagram HERE The pin is #8. It supports all the components #1 to #6 that make up the seal at the top of the shaft.

Before replacing the shaft, check the gearcase and exhaust housing on a surface plate and dial indicator for being bent. If bent, it will snap another shaft. Maybe not today or tomorow, but give it time and enough bends back and forth as it rotates and...

Thanks for the replies - I have learned something new. However, I want to remove the shaft from the gear casing as it snapped off at the water pump. It does not seem to want to slide out so I guess there is something holding it in. Thank you.

Read what Vic wrote you, you have to rotate the shaft to a point where the pin holding it in will line up with the housing then it should pull upward, look at the diagram he posted, the pin is at the bottom of the shaft. He referred to the pin at the top but there is also one at the bottom, I think it is the same concept for the lower and upper. Never worked on one but judging by the diagram this is how it works.

The pin near the bottom of the shaft, #17 in the diagram I gave, is the pump impeller drive pin.

As far as i can see there is nothing retaining the drive shaft in the gear case (no nut on the bottom or pin through the pinion gear so once the water pump housing is removed it should simply pull out.

Apologies for assuming you were asking about removing the shaft from the crankshaft. It's that pin at the top that fools many people when they are trying to remove the gearcase assembly to get to the water pump.

Agreed, there is nothing holding it into the gearcase. Below the water pump's stainless steel plate is a bearing plate. Remove the bearing plate and you can get a good grip on the shaft and pull it out.

I have a feeling you are going to ignore the advice about checking the housings. Oh well....
