Hi everyone! First post.

I just acquired a 16' Jupiter V —with a 65 hp Mercury 650 Kiekhaefer.

It came with canvas top and is is ok shape.

I brought it home and started to disassemble. I had to remove a section of the stern floor to inspect. Water logged styrofoam!

This weekend I will take out the floor and replace it.

Overall it is in ok shape. not too much corrision.
I have the seats and they are in great shape. They are the loung type that convert to a laying position. I will be painting them.

The engine is a 1968 Mercury 650 (65 HP) Red decals on black.
Tomorrow t goes to the marine shop for the once over and engine test. I know it needs the prop seal fixed, and a new prop or a rebuilt one.

The trailer will need a bit of "tweeking". I think I am going to buy an axle and spring set for it to beef it up. Right now it has utility trailer wheels and I would like 14"'s on some good rims.

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement window? It is the rounded type with the center vent.

Well, I hope this turns out.

BTW...I've looked around at some of the projects here and like what I am seeing! Well done lads!

Great looking boat. Looks almost the same as mine but my splashwell is different. Yours must be just a year or two newer. It will be fairly impossible to find a windshield. I ended up replacing it altogether with a more modern split windshield from a newer bowrider someone was parting out on ebay. Is the problem with yours just that it's frosted up? You might be able to buff it back to clear with some sort of compound. Mine was cracked and bent so I had to replace it. Welcome to iboats and the Starcraft club. There are at least 3 of us with Jupiters.

Bill welcome to iboats and with the pictures you included :D The Starcraft club. Looks like a great starting point there and EZ is right theres a few of us with Jupiters . I think the only other Jupiter owner that hasnt chimes in yet is Andy . Ez I am thinking Late 60's on Bills boat since it still has the rounded windshield and the splashwell looks just like the one on my 70 Jupiter but my windshield is the squared off one .Which puts it between yours and mine :D.

Welcome to the Starcraft owners club and the best site on the web for what you are doing.

If your windshield is not cracked or otherwise unusable you might look into the Novus brand trio of products for restoring Plexiglas. #1 for general cleaning, #2 for minor scratches and #3 for bigger scratches. Gouges are another matter. I have used if for years in museums to clean up dust covers. It might be in the big box stores but if not it is available on line.

Re: Yet Another 16' Starcraft :0)

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I took the whole rig to the marine shop today. He is giving it the once over. He did notice a crack in the gear housing, adjacent to where the bearing sits inside on the prop end of the shaft. Jimminy! That will cost if he can't weld it.

Other then that, no news is good news I guess. I will find out either tomorrow or the next day.

Anyone got a lower end for a 650 Merc Thunderbolt serial starts 230... so I am guessing 1968? The boat most likely is the same.

My windshield is cracked, bummer, but I like the "Mod" look ? a three window look.

I got the boat from a dealer who bought it at an estate auction. There was no ownership.

I am thinking a white hull, tan interior and some modest strips.

Again thanks. :)

Re: Yet Another 16' Starcraft :0)

Good morning guys, no fishing for me today, but I hear the salmon are starting to move into the rivers.

Marine plywood $5/8" for the deck $118.00 CAD /sheet 4'x8'
Has anyone done the calculation to determine how many I should get. I don't want to just get two and then find out I need a third and have to go back to the store. (Ontario Plywood Specialist, in Stoney Creek, ON) If you are in the Toronto are, this is the best price around. Should I glass it before I install it?
Any experts? (that's loaded question lol ;0))

Home Depot for the pink foam and bed liner for the side walls.

Can someone lead me to a good supplier of SS rivets and what size I'll need?

Appreciated.

Hate to tell you but you'll need a 3rd sheet. It sucks cuz you're only off by like a foot or two but that's the deal.

Awe that really sucks at $118 bucks a sheet! I think I'll leave the bow piece in then, or at least recycle what I can.

I gotta say....that's money I wouldn't spend. Get a good quality exterior ply and take care of it. If your boat is stored properly a good exterior ply floor will probably outlast your interest in that particular boat. Seal it with epoxy and it will last even longer. As far as I understand, marine ply just has more plys, less voids and maybe uses a higher quality glue. It IS NOT treated against rot. Also, I went with 3/4" ply on mine and I don't regret it. It's nice and solid under foot.

Welcome to the Mad House!!!!

Like EZ says..Exterior ply treated is your best friend...Forget about that 118 a sheet stuff..save that $$ for your OB.

Good looking boat..what kinda stripes? I am a bit partial to stripes..makes everything faster!

Gotta say,
I have never seen a windshield with a doggy door..lol

Re: Yet Another 16' Starcraft :0)

Good day.

The engine runs! She had a diagnostic done and came back good. He hooked up the battery and fuel line, an started it on the first try in about two seconds.

Compression: 1 121
2 123
3 125
4 130

Today sucked at work, but the hunt for a lower end paid off. Google is great! I found one. :) The guy who has it is interested in my cracked lower end for the gear parts so he can fill another, not cracked, housing he has and rebuild a second one. A bit of a trade is going to happen. Sweet!

This weekend I will be removing all of the old floor, swamped Styrofoam and then doing a leak test. I'll post some pictures as I go.

The marine mechanic I took it to said the engine was solid. The top end is in real great shape. I'll need to replace some wires that are cracked which I knew about and all the fuel lines that are swelling. Winter is coming so now I have something to do.

For now

Great Bill..Thats all good news 4 you..

When you tear out your current deck
Dont be a gorilla and just rip and tear..
Think ahead and remove as intact as possible so that you will have a template for your new wood.

Nice find! And you're makin' great progress too.

Can the windshield be taken to an auto glass shop and repaired? I'd hate to see you lose that center ventilation window. Way cool.

I really like the red and white boat you showed... awesome!

Re: Yet Another 16' Starcraft :0)

Thanks, yeah she is a real good find. It was on Kijiji for less than 1 minute when I saw it. I called and the deal was done. Then I called the wife.

Well I haven't given any play by play so here it goes.

I drilled out the rivets on the decking and removed the floor. One item to note. To preserve the vertical "stud" if I may call it that, that the side walls rivet and screw to, I had to notch about a 1.1/2 " section of plywood to allow it to swing out past the stud. Then I realized that was not how it should be done. To get it out, you slide it aft. Dohhh! No big deal. I remember that for when I install the new one. It will slide into place.

So then it was onto the seat base today. I have the new base done. I am going to wrap it in chocolate carpet. That will go great with the new floor I am planning. No details on that yet.

Here is the windshield crack. I don't think it is possible, but I will call a few glass shops to see if they can do anything. Can Lexan be heated and shaped? Google time. :)

Then onto the pink. No leaks so a dry fit first.

Re: Yet Another 16' Starcraft :0)

I took the engine over to the place where the lower end is today.
So no boat at home. I think I am going through withdrawals!

So, I had look at the tinstock thread. It's only 10 hours on I-99 S -828 km.
I am considering it, but will I be done?

I also saw many boat projects. This is a great site!!

I am thinking of using my existing windscreen as a mold, so to speak, for a sheet of Lexan and a heat gun. Any advise?

Re: Yet Another 16' Starcraft :0)

10 hours? That's no biggie :)

If you can't get a Jupiter done by June you're really crawling. Andy in NY got his done in a couple weeks! Just some friendly encouragement.

I wish I had some insight for you on the windshield but as you can see I ended up just swapping mine for an ebay special.

By they way, update your profile with your location. We Starcraft guys like to know where each other are from.
