92 Evinrude puking oil!

Here's the deal. Finished fishing yesterday, pulled out the boat, lifted the engine and it starts puking oil out of a hole in the front edge of the lower unit.
Any ideas about where to start with this? 92 250hp Evinrude V-6.
Thanks

Removing the cover would be a good start :D:D

Check oil line running to the VRO. May or may not be oil. Could be mix from flooded carbs, leaking fuel line after the VRO.

Couldn't pull the cover in the middle of a busy ramp :)
According to my "finger test" it was black, real ucky, felt like thick oil (like 90Weight). Think it was oil. :)

Most likely it is unburned fuel mix and nothing to worry about. I presume the motor is running fine other than the sludge coming out of the water vent hole in the lower unit. If you were doing a lot of idling then that is probably what it is. Of course you should pull the cover to make sure there are no obvious leaks. But if you can see leaks in the motor area, the sludge would likely be dripping down the exhaust housing from the motor and not from the vent hole.

psteurer, thanks for the info. Since the lake we were on is a no-wake lake, we were doing a lot of idling. Sludge is exactly the word I would use. Motor runs fine, idles fine, no lower unit collisions etc.

Re: 92 Evinrude puking oil!

change the lower unit oil, and check the level before changing, if leaking out it is leaking in.
Changing lower unit oil

There are 2 straight slot screw on the starboard side of the lower unit. Top is vent plug, bottom, drain and fill plug. ( do not touch Phillips head screw).

Remove the bottom plug, put container under lower unit, now remove the vent plug, while the oil is draining, replace the seals on the plugs BRP part # 311598 or Sierra part # 184248, buy several of these, ( they are a one time use item)

Walmart and many places sell a little hand pump. To use to fill the unit, you insert the tube into the bottom hole, and pump till oil reaches the vent hole. Install the vent screw, then remove hose, install the drain-fill screw, clean up mess.

The screws can be hard to get out, do not mess up the head. You may need to employ an impact screw driver to break them loose.
