Hello,
My 87 mercury has a problem starting. The black plastic flap on the tillitson carb slams shut just prior to the starter turning over. There is a brass tipped plunger that gets sucked up into a soleniod which causes that to occur. When you force the flap back open while trying to start the motor, the engine fires and runs fine although it seems to want to run rich. The motor has been setting for a couple of years prior to this and the carb has been freshly rebuilt and fresh gas has been flushed through the motor. Any suggestions or tests for the soleniod or other possible problems for this? thanks

Hi,
The black flap is your choke. It is actuated by pushing the ing key in when you turn over the engine. So either you are pushing it in not knowing or it is wired incorrectly so when you turn it over the choke engages without pushing the key in. It is a little hard to tell if the choke shutter is sticking in the closed position. If this is happening then the nut holding it on is to tight or the return spring is not working.
