Replaced Stater Now motor has no power

I replaced my stater and now my boat runs at home but when I take it to the lake and put it in the water the boat shuts off when I put it in gear. Could I have put the stater in off the mark ? Pleas help

The stator does not have to be timed it simply generates the power for the ign. system, make sure the spark advance is working and the only other thing that could have happened is you have wiring misconnected.

You might get more specific help if you would tell us what motor.
