What shaft lenght do I need?

Okay, so I'm not sure if this is an obvious question or not, but how do determine the proper length of the shaft. Long shaft. Short shaft? I believe that I need a short shaft for my Red Fish restore. The boat came with a 1968 Johnson 20hp that I believe is a short shaft. I want to fix that motor and sell it and hunt for a 35hp which someone on the forum told me my boat came with.

So I guess maybe my question has two parts. How to determine the shaft length for my boat, and when I find a motor, how do I know if it's a short or long shaft. Is there one measurement for short and one for long?

Re: What shaft lenght do I need?

what is the measurement from where the motor sits on the transom to the keel?

to measure the motor. measure from the transom clamp where it sits on the transom, to the plate just above the prop.

older motors short shaft 17-18" long shaft 22-23"

newer motors short 15" long 20" ex long 25" and then 30"
