Default 1989 60 hp Mariner- lost forward and reverse

was out fishing this past friday and everything was working fine. motored to my spots, did a little troling and no problems. when returning to dock coming out a no wake zone as i accecerated it happened. bam- high rpms, i quickly shut it down. i thought i spun a prop. trimed it up, prop was still there, oh s#it! tried to start it back up, now no power double oh s#it! was towed back to ramp. trim didnt work, so needless say it was not fun towing it back home(now i have some skeg issues). this saturday i went out to check things out- low and behold, now i have power. started motor and still no forward or reverse. trimed it up, checked lu oil and it was a little milky with some very small metal debris on magnet. dropped the lu to check things out. there was a thick milky slime on the impeller housing. checked impeller- it was ok, not great fins bent, butt not broken. refilled lu oil then putt everthing back together. started it up and now no tell tale at all (in the past it took about 15 to 20 seconds to pee), and still no forward or reverse. took a break, then back to check some other things out- now no power once again....... anyone have any advice. i know i have lu issues, but whats this power issue- works, then not?

Ayuh,.... My Guess is,...
The splines are Gone in the bottom of the crankshaft, probably from a lack of Grease...
That explains both the lack of forward/ reverse,+ No water flow...

bump......... one more thing to add. the prop would not spin with engine running either in forward or reverse. it used to spin a little in neutral before all the problems started. when i dropped the lower unit the splines on drive shaft were fine. then when i checked the lower unit i could turn the drive shaft by hand and the prop would spin. reassembled the lower uint then when prop was turned by hand it made a clunking noise in forward and reverse. but when powered up it would not spin. any ideas on what has happened, did i shear a pin on the prop?(does this have a pin) i can not get the prop off - have tried a prop puller and various other pullers and the d#mn thing wont come off.

Give this a try it helped me. There is a "shift" shaft it is small and behind the main shaft. There is a collar on it that slips into the drive find the spline on the drive side and try to turn it. you should be able to find reverse and drive. My old pontoon boat had a 75 merc and for some reason the retaining clip would come loose and it would act the same. Heck worth a shot. Good luck

Ayuh,... As far as I know, If my guess is Right,... You need a New Crankshaft....
I imagine the cost would be gettin' close to motor replacement costs...

Btw,... Your Bump post pretty much confirms it....
