need help please

I have a 87 johnson 90 hp i am trying to drop the lower end and i need to know if the shift rod at the motor is held in by a push pin or a screw and what is the easyest way to get it off. thanks

That is held in by a tapered pin screw. A real pain to see and get at but it can be done. Look under the carbs from the port side and you will see the screw through the mechanism. This has to be removed completely. So have some very long nose pliers handy to lift it out after unscrewing it.

Agreed and it helps to clear as much hardware etc out of the way and have one of those telescoping magnets in case your as prone to dropping screws as I am.

1/4" socket, universal joint and various extensions make the job possible. Easier to remove if you take the carb's off first as it gives much easier access. Tip for replacing it is to wrap the bolt head with some teflon tape or similar so it does not want to fall out of the socket as easily.

Don't forget the bolt under the lower unit fin.
