IS it normal for the water pump housing to be covered in grease? Thick black grease. Just the outside, the inside is nice and clean

drive pressure tested fine... oils was clean the grease looks like engine sludge. The #4 cyl had some seriuos blow by and so I bought a rapido long block that will be here on friday. Also the drive is now on a thru hull exhaust boat, so there should be no soot problem... Anything I should worry about ?

There's no posible way for grease to get to the pump to cover it.

Post some pictures of it.

alpha one pump housing covered in grease and transplant info

alpha one pump housing covered in grease and transplant info

ok so the pic I have is of the cover after I cleaned it. I painted the drive and changed the impeller today. When I craked the drive apart is when I found about a 1/4 inch of sludge on the pump cover it was thick and messy. I really think it was engine soot. The plugs were very black and sooty too.

The shaft going to the top half was also black see pic.

I bought the boat as a donor because it had the same package I hope to transplant the drive pressure tested well and the engine had low compression on clyinder 5 (all were 145-150 #5 was 50 so I imagine a valve problem) so I ordered a new long block, and will fix the old one later. But I am using the transom assembly and outdrive form the donor as well as all the tin from the 350 mag that was in the boat.

The donee boat is the 92 liberator in my signature It had an omc Daddy king cobra and 454 in it.
I had wanted to start a transplant thread like wca tim did but I know some poeple do not like the 500 post threads so I am posting about each gotcha as it happens.

Also, the y pipe problem ( in my last thread) was the result of some one putting non oem bolts in and there were 7/16 non SS bolts that corroded. I got a block off plate and now there is 3/8 12pt ss bolts holding it on. The inner transom plate was missing the bottom 1/4 also.

That's not grease, it's melted plastic. The pump housing is melted and cracked. I assume you have had some overheat problems ?????????

There is no melted plastic it really is grease. The impeller that came out was like new but I changed it for peice of mind. The pic is from my phone which is poor quality and kinds does like look melted plastic. But it really is grease. I will take a pic of the old impeller tommorrow. Is it possible for blow by from an engine to enter into this area and over time cause this sludge?

Re: alpha one pump housing covered in grease

So I pulled all the bellows today and ... The soot was a bunch of engine waste. it looks like a chiminey in the exhaust bellows, too. Since this happens before the drive it seem reasonable that it was the engine not the drive because the bellows comes first r... does this make sense? have another question which I will start a new thread for
