Mercury 402 Tach Problem

Hi Guys i have a problem with my tacho on my mercury 402. It only goes up to around 1000rpm, i have checked the settings and its on 6P, what else can i check to see if the porblem is before the tach or is the tach? thanks.

You must have signal as it goes uo to 1000 so that only leaves the tach which is not repairable.
