i have a 1984 15 ft alumacraft with a 83 johnson 35 seems to run great but for some reason when it idles down it will shut off. when i have the idle bar up it sounds perfect but when it goes down so does the motor, i luckly just replaced the starter so i can still get it up and going no problem....the boat originally came from up north and is now in florida do you think theres a carb problem from the altitude????? ive cleaned the carb best as possible..help??? im trying to order a manual asap but havent got one yet maybe just a carb/idle adjustment????

It looks like your engine has a low speed adjustabe jet on it. Try readjusting the jet and see if it helps. If it spits at idle open it up a little, do it slowly and give the engine time to compensate. You might want to make sure the base idle is correct.

thanks daviet, ill try that... it seems strange it idles fine out of the water at the most with the idle down it sputters a little but stays running ill try doing some minor adjustments to the carb do you think theres a need for a carb kit?? ill probally mess with it as soon as im off work....could that maybe have anything to do with the full speed of the motor it just seems like its not reving very high but its a new boat to me so that might be all she has but still sounds strange???? thanks again for you're help.......

If you are running it out of the water with a set of muffs, if the idle is low it will probably run. When you put it in the water it has back presure in the exhaust. I don't have a manual on your engine, but I would think that on muffs it should idle about 1000 RPM. When you put it in the water fine tune the idle to about 650 to 700 PRM in GEAR. The idle circut will not affect the high speed operation and you might have some other problem. There is also a high speed fixed jet that could be restricted. May be time to overhaul carb and or tune up engine.

thanks again for the quick replies ill do that tonight and then see how things are looking ....the motor really seems to run great once its moving its just tuff while in idle/nuetral to keep it up and going. so you dont think altitude has anything to do with it. i know some motorcycles run a little different when that comes into play..... maybe the same with a boat ???
