1981 35hp evinrude jumping in and out of gear

this motor hasn't been ran for a few years , got it going , put it in the water it works well in the no wake zone, give it some gas and it jumps out of gear then back in, the shifter jumps back and forth , when I hold the shifter forward in stays in gear longer, I adjusted the cable and it wasn't any help, the reverse is perfect, any imformation would be useful , Thanks
