My buddy bought an outboard from a garage sale and decided to put it in the water this morning. It idled fine, but I just got a whone call from the middle of the lake saying that it will not shift into foreward or reverse under any circumstances. Is there something that we could do do get it to shift? Is there a sheer pin or something similar in the driveline that might have broke loose? Any starting points would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Pat

Pull it out of the water and check the prop, see if it rotates free, see if it's even on the motor still???

If he hit something the linkage can jam. If the shifter is not moving that may be why.
This happened to me a few weeks ago. I was able to correct it by working the shifter while turning the prop(MOTOR OFF) I figured this out only after dragging the boat 2 miles up river. DOH!!!

Electric or mechanical shift?
Warm up lever could be up
Shift cable could be broken or disconnected

Exactly--Electric or manual shift?? No point in further guessing till that basic question is answered.

Except check the shear (drive) pin--applies to both systems
