how do I get the shift rod disconnected, the motor was jumping out of gear, tried cable adjustment, works good at lower speeds

Remove the plastic water intake fins on the LU and you will see the shift rod. Unscrew it then you can pop the nut off the rod by sliding it up (something like that). There is a plastic sleeve inside there that holds it on.

Do you mean how do you disconnect the shift rod to drop the lower unit ???
