Took the boat out today and kept blowing the breaker at the bottom of the electric cable terminal (8 wire?). As long as the motor isn't running the tach, tilt etc work fine. When the motor starts, however, the breaker trips almost instantly. Haven't played with anything at all that would explain this. Do these breakers go bad, or is there something else I should check? Hoping to save the weekend...

Have you checked the voltage coming off the rectifier? It should be @13v at fast idle and should not exceed 15v.

Since the breaker is kicking out after the engine is started, your problem is in the charging circuit. These engines have a reputation for burning up rectifiers. That is one of the reasons for the sticky on changing over to a voltage regulator.

Re: 86 force breaker/fuse problem

there was one occasion where the breaker tripped without the motor running. We were running the tilt and it tripped. Tore half the boat apart before we figured out what happened. Any other ideas beside the charge voltage?

Clean all the ground and power connections. Any corrosion will cause high resistance and that will increase current draw.

checked the connections. Everything is clean and looks good. Now, however, the tilt seems to only work going up but not down. Is there a chance that the issue is with the tilt/trim? What would you check first?

thanks

I would check the switch first and the relay second. The switch is the easier of the two to check, but relays usually fail more often than switches.

Its possible you might have a problem with the circuit breaker, its easy enough to put another one in .Napa sell a 30amp with nut terminals,so all you have to do is crimp or soldier some eyelet terminals on ,and that will tell you if its the issue or not. Keep us posted. MOPARMAN

Re: 86 force breaker/fuse problem

you said that it does it when your crank the engine could be that when your switch is turned to the start position that there is a ground wire touching causing the breaker to trip
