I have a 1993 48spl that has blown it's third lower unit. All due to various reasons (mainly bad controls mixed with user error (different users every time)). I have found someone selling a recently rebuilt lower unit and leg from a 1990 40hp and was trying to figure out if this would fit or could be made to fit.

I've done all the part number cross referencing and such on the brp website and the lower units do have different part numbers but I noticed the legs are the same part numbers. So that seems to me like I should be able to bolt an older lower unit (89-92) on the 93 leg or even swap out the whole 93 leg for the 90 leg if something in there is in fact different. I see that the shift linkage is the same p/n too so I'm not conerned about that. I guess the big question is, will the driveshaft fit?

I feel like I've gone as far as I can go on my own, Anyone Know? Thanks

The difference is the driveshaft, as you know a 1989-92 will fit but driveshaft and crankshaft was changed 93. A 1993-2005 will interchange with each other.. Sorry

Darn, well then I guess the next question would be can I swap the driveshafts between the 93 and 90. The driveshaft in my 93 is fine gears are just shot. Is the lower unit end the same just the splines uptop are different?

Is that the P/N for the 93 drive shaft? Are you saying that that will in fact fit the 90 then?

I dont know where TD got those numbers but the 1989-1992 shaft is #433067 and the 1993-2003 is #438399. You can swap the shaft as all the parts are the same but you will need to check the driveshaft shimming with shim tool.

What is a shim tool what does it do and where would you get one? If the lower end of the drive shafts are the same would it be possible to install the gears out of the 90 lower into the 93 lower unit housing?
