I have got a 65 hp 1973 johnson that the shifter is broken in the foot. I took the lower unit off of a 50 hp 1974 evinrude to exchange them and the shafts are different. 50 hp has a 14 spline shaft and the 65 has a 4 or 5 spline shaft
I have removed both shafts and will swap them this afternoon the only differances I have found is that the water pumps are different and the pinion gears are different (both have the same teeth count ) the 65 pinion does not taper as much but looks as if it meshes fine. my question is am I correct in thinking that these 2 housings are the same. the 65 has 4 holes for the water intake and the 50 has 3 holes. and am i on the right track ?

I know they are different because of that. what I need to know is will the gears be the same and interchange? the teeth counts are the same and If I swap the shafts and water pump into the lower unit of the 50 hp foot because it is in better shape the 65 hp foot.
