New to me motor and I'm new to outboards.

This motor will basically only start with ether but runs and starts well afterwards. (I know that is bad and have stopped doing it)

Today I replaced the rectifier, replaced plugs and did a compression test. My dad found the red hose from a can carb cleaner inside the bottom carb.

We checked for spark and got spark on 1,3, and 5 but none on 2,4, or 6.

Should we swap the switch boxes to see if the problem moves?

If switch box is the problem do they need to be replaced in pairs?

What would cause a switch box to go bad?

Thanks,
Brian

Re: switch box inline 6

I have an old 1986 Merc inline 6 that had the same issue earlier this season. Moving the switchboxes as you suggested is a good way to see if that is really the problem. It could be the stator as well, but in my case it was a switchbox. I picked up a pair of Mallory ones off Ebay for a bit over $100 each, not a bad deal. Once they were installed she purred like a kitten. Once you have that motor running you will love it, plenty of power and it sounds mean too.
