Default Evinrude 60 with strange model number wont idle

I just bought a boat with what appears to be a 1971 model Evinrude 60. The model number is 60163C. The chart on this site lists a 60173, but not a 60163. I checked the welch plug on the motor and it had the same number so I dont think its a misprint. Whats the diffrence in the two? Also, it runs like a top except that it wont idle when you put it in the water... it idles fine when its out of the water. Does anybody have any idea why this is?

So is a 60162, 60172,60173

Does yours have an electric shift?

Hey rustaddict, you wouldn't happen to have a Surf 60 (Surf Six-Oh) would you? Special graphics, very limited production and very rare. If that is what you have, I hope nobody has messed with the paint.

yes TX, it does have electric shift. The ol' motor runs like a top other than the idle problem. I have just bought a 1971 Evinrude factory service maunual on ebay. Hopefully it'll point me in the right direction on how to fix this when it arrives.
FR, how would I tell if it's a surf 60? A previous owner painted the boat battleship gray and painted the motor as well. I would like to put the right colors and the right decals back on the motor as soon as I figure out what they are.

Well if it was a Surf 60, it isn't any more. They had that outrageous surfer paint and decals shown in the picture. As I recall, each dealer was allowed to order just one (I think). We got ours, but I didn't have enough forsight to take a picture of it.

I dunno, they manage to restore rare art paintings that have been painted over. Maybe there is hope.

Heck, I don't even know if it is a Surf 60. Only guessing and hoping.

lovrust,
I would rebuild your carbs and make sure every jet/orifice uis clean as well as the passageways and use brand new carb kits. Maybe flush the fuel tank out if you don't know the last time it was done or how old the fuel is. Thanks and let us know how it goes, Bob

Where's a good place to get carb kits and tune up stuff for this motor?

Rustaddict,
You should be able to go to your local JohnnyRude dealer in town and buy your carb kits are order them off EBay or any marine dealer like Great Lakes Skipper or someone like that. Take care, Bob
