Iran: Jews, Christians Must Wear Badges<br />NEWSMAX.COM<br />newsmax.com/archives/ic/2...shtml?s=lh<br /><br /><br />In a move reminiscent of the Nazis forcing Jews to wear a Star of David insignia, Iran’s parliament has reportedly passed a law requiring Jews, Christians and other religious minorities to wear color-coded badges to identify them as non-Muslims.<br /><br />The law would also set a dress code for all Iranians, requiring them to wear "standard Islamic garments.”<br /><br />The law, which must be approved by Iran's "Supreme Leader" Ali Khamenei before taking effect, requires Iran's roughly 25,000 Jews to sew a yellow strip of cloth on the front of their clothes. Christians would be forced to wear red badges and Zoroastrians would wear blue cloth, according to Canada’s National Post.<br /><br />"This is reminiscent of the Holocaust," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles.<br /><br /><br />"Iran is moving closer and closer to the ideology of the Nazis."<br /><br />"We thought this had gone the way of the dodo bird, but clearly in Iran everything old and bad is new again. It's state-sponsored religious discrimination."<br /><br />The new law was drafted two years ago, but lingered in the Iranian parliament until recently when it was revived at the urging of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.<br /><br />Ahmadinejad has repeatedly described the Holocaust as a myth and earlier this year announced Iran would host a conference to re-examine the Nazis' "Final Solution."<br />Ali Behroozian, an Iranian exile living in Toronto, said the new law would make religious minorities immediately identifiable and allow Muslims to avoid contact with non-Muslims.<br /><br />Iran's small pockets of Jewish, Christian and other religious minorities "have all been persecuted for a while, but these new dress rules are going to make things worse for them," he told the Post.<br /><br />Australia's Prime Minister John Howard told reporters about the law: "Anything of that kind would be totally repugnant to civilized countries, if it's the case, and something that would just further indicate to me the nature of this regime. It would be appalling.”<br /><br />The Simon Wiesenthal Center has written to U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan calling on the international community to bring pressure on Iran to drop the law.<br /><br />"The world should not ignore this," said Rabbi Hier. "The world ignored Hitler for many years. He was dismissed as a demagogue. I read the follow ups on this and so far this is only a rumor and it is denied by everybody involved including the Iranian christians and Zoro-astrians,who under the same rule were supposed to wear a blue or red piece of cloth.<br />So let's wait a bit and see what develops.

My understanding of this is, there are various conservative elements in the Iranian theocracy that welcomes this form of ethnic identifying signature, their reasoning for this is to identify and punish their fellow muslims who indulge in the more liberal lifestyle which is permitted to non-muslims.<br />So they claim, nevertheless this hideous form of discrimination has been rejected by the ruling cleric, though not on the grounds of discrimination but on their ability to enforce such a law without arousing what they fear the most, large scale civil discontent and street demonstrations.

Not everything is as it appears. All this will do is to maintain the fear level high, and keep speculative oil prices high, which benefits Iran, and other oil producing states.<br /><br />Iran isn't stupid, and knows if they actually acted on this in some sort of "ethnic cleansing" manner, it would surely be suicidal.<br /><br />BTW, have anyone heard Newt Gingrich speak on the role of the UN in this sort of thing? His theory is there are some issues that the UN should just be ignored, and the G7 countries are better equipped, thru cooperative efforts, to affect change thru economic pressure.<br /><br />It makes a lot of sense, and is worth a try, and certainly better than complaing incessantly about how ineffective the UN is...

UN rhetoric means nothing to Iran's prez. In fact the more the UN interjects, the more fervent the fanatics. The G7 idea has merit, but #8 (Russia) is likely to throw in a monkey wrench.<br /><br />It could be argued that the US is engaging in the behavior described here, but covertly. No badges or stripes. PHONE numbers! At first I was leary but accepting of the newest NSA phone numbers story. I figured that it was one of those things I was willing to sacrifice for national security. After all, it's just numbers. But many people have more than one phone number. So the govt has generously posted each and every one of us with our own unique number to attach all those multiple phone numbers to. Much like the number tattoos the Nazis used to ID undesirables, except nobody but them can see it. That's downright Sinister!<br /><br />And they can attach any other information they choose to add according to rumor. It certainly wouldn't be the least bit difficult. All they need is memory and tons more is being made every day. If that is the case, each and every one of us has the beginnings of a top secret dossier available only to the govt. THAT is spying on your own people and UNACCEPTABLE! Sounds like grounds for Revolt to me. Do so at the ballot box come November.

This fine Gannett publication is the very same one that made the completely bogus claim that Americans were being spied-upon and the phoney (sorry for the punn) phone company records. I might as well get my news from the National Enquirer -- so i do not blame you for not reading it <br /><br />Back on-topic, my attitude is the same as some others here... A few use the rationalization that they "won't do it cuz it's too crazy"... remember who we're discussing here. Iran's president is crazy for sure, but the real power behind him is the clerics (Mullah's?) and I don't think they are crazy.<br /><br />The Iranian people certainly are not crazy, as a whole, and Iran as a country is reasonably advanced, at least for a middle-east country.<br /><br />While it may be necessary ultimately to take military action, I'd prefer we try to utilize diplomatic efforts, creatively and collectively, and avoid bellicose comments to the press that have no chance of achieving anything meaningful, even if Iran's president insists on doing it himself.<br /><br />As far as Russia throwing a monkey wrench into it, so what? It's informal and unofficial anyway--if they refuse to cooperate in any reasonable effort, just exclude them from the effort, and let them play in the UN. The best way to deal with someone who wants to take their ball and go home, is bring a different ball to the game and let them go!<br /><br />I know it wont be easy, and we may not get every little thing we want, but the fundamental goals should be universally desired by the G7, if not the G8, and it is worth a try...

PW2, a very wise approach to the chest-beating Iranian leadership. And the approach to it that our own leadership has made to-date. We are officially ignoring their chest beating, and concentrating on the very real and present dangers of actual arms developemment and global issues. while I think the badge issue would be a bad move it wont affect me or most of us here in the US,<br /> however if Iran and Venezuela both go forward with their yak about accepting only Euros's for oil stand by for an instant 30-40 cent hike.<br /> so far its not something in the US alphabet news but its in most the rest of the worlds news sources.<br />and from a statement from the VE oil minister and the VE finance minister.<br /> I really dont care if they develop a bomb as long as they dont have the delivery systems. China and Russia may care and Isreal will for sure.<br /> however I am confident that if they actually get close we will read about an Isreali airstrike just as they did in the mid eighties with the Iraqi program.<br /> but our Intel is not as good in that reagion as theirs and they dont tell the US all they know but its their tails in the sling.<br />so far Irainian delivery systems are rather crude and unreliable and mostly short ranged.<br /> in the end they will most likly nuke themselves accidentally.

"however if Iran and Venezuela both go forward with their yak about accepting only Euros's for oil stand by for an instant 30-40 cent hike."<br /><br />This is partly a political decision, the Iranian and the Venezuelan government both do have a penchant for thumbing their noses at the USA at every given opportunity.<br />This decision to price their oil in euros is more than likely due to the present and future outlook at the value of the American dollar, if the slide of the dollar continues, other oil exporting countries may follow in the Iranian and VE governments footsteps.

I can't believe I agree with PW on two subjects today. I feel there has been a lot of useful points brought out here but one I would like to make is this: If we ignore the UN and go with the G7 or 8 why should we continue to pour millions of dollars into the UN while hosting spies and who knows what under the guise of Diplomatic immunity? The UN has shown how useless it is and down right dangerous to us.
