I am considering purchasing a 70's model merc that the owner says is stuck in gear but will start in gear. I asked if he'd had the lower unit off then put back on and he said that he bought it (the previous owner said everything was good but you never know of course) and when he hooked it up to his cables it was stuck in forward and he didn't want to fiddle with it. He wants $450 for it and I know very little about outboards....is it worth the gamble or should I keep looking? Is it a matter of adjusting the cables ? Does it neeed lower end work? Any suggestions?
