Think this used car was a good deal?

Been shopping for a car to replace the aging 1998 Lincoln Town Car with 170000 miles. I wanted something that got better gas milage and was still fun to drive, maybe even on the "cool" side. Set my budget at $10,000 and checked with my credit union for loan rates, etc. I can handle the loan with no problem. So off I go in search of a used car.

Lots of economy cars to choose from, but for 10k, they are old, or really high millage or both. Even checked into ordering a new Camaro, but the price is too high for comfort.

Then I found this 1998 Pontiac Firebird V6 coupe w/ 28,781 claimed miles. So I went to check it out this morning.

The dealer had a car fax report showing the milage is true. Dealer claimed they just took it on trade and it was garage kept and owned by a couple who were regular Volvo customers. I checked out the car. It sure looks like new. The exhaust system is still shiny, the brake rotors don't have rust inside the cooling fins, the calipers are still shiny, there is no brake dust on anything. The rear axle and other undercarriage parts have little or no rust buildup. Under the hood the car looked like new, and the dealer had not prepped it. Still a layer of road dust on fender wells, etc. Very little in the way of chips in paint behind wheels and front bumper. It was clean.

The interior looks like new, no wear on the seats, pedals, wheel, stereo controls, etc. No garbage, food, M&M's, etc under the carpet around the seats! Every was perfect, except the door on the ash tray was broken.

Took it for a nice drive. Runs smooth, car is tight and AC blows cold.

So I bought it. Dealer held out for high price, about 2K over the NADA suggested price for the car with low miles and clean condition. They came down $500, but no more. Just would not budge. The car is about 2 hour drive away, so they said after washing and a new battery, they would flat bed the car to me next week. I took the deal.

Check out the rotors and calipers. All wheels are like this.

The interior was not wiped with "armor all" . Its really that clean and shiny.

I like it. But what I found interesting was my wife thinks it a great idea to buy this over a 5 year old Celica with 60k for the same price. This is going to be my daily commute car. Rated 31 MPG highway, so it should lower my fuel bill over the Town Car! LOL! Funny thing is, its the same year as the Town Car it replaces!

I had a new 96 Grand Prix and it was a very nice car. I have heard the entire Firebird line was plagued with problems, but who knows. I'm assuming a V6, since you would never see 31MPG out of a V8. The V6 is nice, beefy enough to give power but not drain fuel as much. The Pontiac cloth interior is also very soft; One of the nicer cloth interiors I've had.

I think the rule of boats applies here.. if you love it, you got a good deal.

You are correct, the Firebirds are V6's and the Trans Am's are V8's. You can figure that car is 12 years old, so it's only been driven an average of 2,250 miles a year. That is great! I would not mind having that car at all, it is very sharp looking. Maybe the price was a little high, but heck, that thing isn't even broken in yet. Hopefully you have nothing but great times with that car.

I expect the car to be reliable. I had a 1997 Camaro V6 that I ordered new, ran it up to a 120K and nothing ever went wrong with that car. Bright red with T tops and tan leather interior, every 17 year old kid for miles showed up at my door when I put a "for sale" sign in the car. I ended up selling it to a the son of a co-worker. He kept it for about 5 years and over 200,000 miles. Thats why I really don't believe the ratings from JD Power and Consumer Reports. My personal experiences are often in direct conflict with their reporting.

It's a sharp car Mark. Congratulations. I personally think they're pulling your leg on the 31mpg Hwy, but it's a nice car either way. Like you, I think it's not even broken in with that many miles. The only car I've ever bought with less than 60,000 miles was a '68 chevelle. I drove my last truck to 270,000 miles before I sold it and bought my "new" one with only 100,000 on it (both silverado z-71's). The motor and transmission, and 4wheel drive worked like new. The front end was needing a LITTLE work. I was just ready for something "new".
It obviously wasn't dogged out by some youngster, either. That would be my number one worry buying a car like that. I don't think you have that to worry about.
How about giving a report on that 31 mpg if you get a chance? I'm very interested.

31 hwy should be easily done. My 99 mustang GT will get 30 hwy. ;D

A guy at work drices his trans am year round, even in the snow, with no problems.

What a great find. I've always loved the Trans-Am/Firebird. Like 'em MUCH better than their Camaro counterpart. A friend of mine from childhood was bequethed a mint 1976 anniversary edition silver Trans-Am his dad bought new and never drove. It sat in his garage for 18 years before he died. He had an identical black one that he drove.

A v-8 with 6 speed will be faster and get close to the same mileage on the freeways due to the 6th gear ratio. City driving not so much haha

The specs I could find online list 1000 lbs tow capacity. Pretty standard number for all smaller GM vehicles. But reading the owners manual, it states 1500 lbs w/o trailer brakes. I know it could tow the MFG with not problem, that is a flyweight. Will have to take the Bayliner to the scale and see what it weighs in at. Hmmm.... add a trans cooler, air shocks in the back, a posi rear (for the ramps) and it might just do it. :D

I probably won't put a hitch on it. But I do plan on putting a posi in it for winter driving. My old Camaro had a posi, and never got stuck in the snow. In really bad weather, I used to add some weight (rock salt bags for the water softener) and I would be passing front wheel drive cars stuck on hills all the time.

Huh? Is there something about red not going with Pontiac I'm unaware of? :D

Kinda stands out, doesn't it?
