I am very new to outboard motors and I just got an old 1962 Johnson sea horse 5 1/2 Hp motor to use with a 12 ft jonboat. It starts first pull and opens up great. The issue I am having is that when I lower the throttle to shift or to go to a lower speed it sputters and dies...is this an idle speed issue or could it be something more complicated? I have some experience working on small motors (scooters, motorcycles, etc...)

Any advice would be appreciated:)

It almost sounds like you need to richen up the low speed adjustment. Open the low speed jet about 1/2 turn. Have you checked the motor over as far as compression, spark and fuel system? It may be time for a carb overhaul and tune up.
