does anyone out there have the diagram (or can you email me) from the original owners manual on how to install the bottom part of the shift solenoid into the (i believe its the oil pump) is there something that holds the bottom of the shift solenoid in place>

i had a 70' hydro electric lower unit johnson 60hp with stripped gears and dog. 60esl70b
i replaced lower unit with 69' evinrude hydro electric 55hp 55973a

it was shifting fine with 60hp lower unit f/n/r but thunking due to worn gears and dog

now with the 69' evinrue lower end on, its stuck in forward
i put the shift solenoid assembly from the 70' in the 69' gearcase
but im not sure how the bottom of the assembly goes in. do i have to take out the oil pump does it attach to the back of the oil pump behind the forward gear>>? please help
still frustrated

Re: 69 evinrude shift solenoid pictures

I don't have pictures, but I have a 55 hydro-electric. I'm having issues as well but I do know the shift valve (plunger) has a ball end that is held in a plastic clip, attached to the end of the shift rod. On the 68 & 69 55hp the plunger goes directly into a port of the pump...just slides straight down in

The oil pump and solenoids are very different between the 1969 and 1970. You can't use the '70 solenoids in a '69 oil pump if I am umderstand that's what you are trying to do. It just doesn't work that way.

If you are thinking of swapping the oil pump from one to the other, I don't know if that is possible or not--never tried it. But to answer your question, the oil pump is the last part to come out of the case and the first part to go back in. It takes a huge honkin' snap ring pliers with special extensions to get the pump retaining ring out and back in.

Re: 69 evinrude shift solenoid pictures

sorry, i missed that you were trying to exchange 70 parts into your 69. the pic I posted is for a 68 or 69 only. (and sorry it's not for sale, I just happen to be working on mine.) 70 shift rod is for sure different. On 70 model the shift rod does not go directly into pump as in the 68 & 69.
If your hearing a click (light click with power to green, then additional click when applying power to blue while still appling power to green) the solenoids would appear to be working.
Note, wrong oil will make it not shift out of forward, must be type c or premium
