1985 35 HP Mercury - Cracked Block??

I have a 35HP mercury outboard that has been out of the water for a couple years. Installed new plugs, water pump and cleaned the wiring and it fired right up.

Problem: Where the top spark plug screws into the head, there is a steady stream of water pouring out. Water is still flowing through the tell tale and the engine seems to run fine. Took it out for a test and it ran for 4 hours with no issues. I assume it wouldn't run if water was filling the cylinder and am wondering if the outside of a water jacket could have been cracked by over tightening the spark plug???

Hi,

No, you have bad gasket and maybe a warped water jacket plate.
When you have it off (if you take it off) lay a straight edge across the
plug hole to see if you have a warped sock (cylinder) If it is warped you can have it planed at a machine shop or try using Loc-Tite 518 on the gasket when you put in a new one. If it looks good then put in a new gasket. Only use the 518 if it seems warped. The gaskets are made of a self sealing material and should work ok if everything is square.
