HELP......I have a 1989 Mariner on my bass boat. The motor is starting but idling rough. There is a large amount of smoke (2 stroke oil)coming from the exhaust when starting the motor. When the motor is put into gear it usually stalls. When it does run, it is extremly sluggish and will only go about 10 miles per hour. This problem occured after storing the boat for about 10 months without starting it..........if you feel you know what my problem is PLEASE RESPOND. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.
Yes you need to post this under the Outboard Motor Section, However, from what you describe, I would suggest running a compression check on all cylinders, my guess is you will find one really low, possibly a broken ring, good luck.
Yea the outboard section, but while I'm here, if this motor was not taken care of in the right manner upon storing, then you will have take the carbs off and really soak them in some good carb cleaner for a couple of days to get all the varnish build up out of the insides of them. I mean take them apart and soak them good. Put new plugs in and put in water and start. Let run just above idle for a little bit to clean all the carb cleaner out of the system, then go from there. While you are soaking the carbs, do a comp. check as stated before.
