Loss Of Power

I have a 1980 merc 1500. If I go to WOT, most of the time it will rev up real quick (like 2 seconds) and then bog down to where the boat is going about 15-25mph. Sometimes, very rarely, when you go to WOT, it responds as it should and the boats doing over 40mph for about 30 seconds, the proceeds to bog down again. Any speculation of whats going on?

i hade this happen 2 my old 15 hp merc what was happening i whould get a lot of fuel 4 that top speed but afer a while it whouldnt get as much as it needs. what i did was replace fuel lines filters and get a new jet, fixed the problem and it runs better than it ever did. it still works great 2 this day

Free, Merc did not build a 1500 in 1980. Either the year is wrong or the HP is wrong. I will assume it is a inline six?

I think you may have two issues. The first seems obvious. Rebuild the fuel pump, to correct the fuel supply issue. If that doesn't solve all your issues, post back and we will help.

Your right. Looked at the title and its a 1973....all the fuel lines and things are new.
