My 115 hp Optimax has run great and still does, however this year it is using way more of the high priced Mercury synthetic oil than previous years. The only changes this spring were three new plugs and new accessory belt. After changing the belt I revved the motor in idle and it hit the rev limiter and the alarm briefly sounded. Since then the alarm has sounded a couple of times when the engine first starts and once when skiing at 3500 rpm. In all cases the alarm only sounded for a few seconds.
I think the motor has been using oil at about 25:1, but it does not seem to smoke any more than in previous years and there is no evidence of an oil leak under the hood.
The motor still seems to start, idle and run as well as before but at C$80 for 4 litres of the optimax oil its starting to get expensive.
Anybody have any ideas?
