Re: 2001 150 Mercury jumps when in forward gear
Two tests
First, with the key OFF< and the lanyard PULLED OFF, shift into Forward gear, and STAND on the left side blade of the prop turning the motor. Does it turn the motor without slipping, clunking, firmly locking into gear?
The problem may not be the gearcase or shift cable adjustment.
Pull the spark plugs and inspect them for carbon accumulation, is there enough one one or more plugs that may be causing it to short or misfire until it 'burns' clear enough to fire for a while?
Replace the spark plugs with new plugs and retest acceleration, if cured, then you should pull the airbox cover and observe the carb throats (NOT running) while you pump the primer bulb, watching for even the slightest amount of fuel flooding in any carb which could cause spark plug fuel fouling at low speeds, yet burn clear and operate acceptably at WOT.
