Someone must have dropped the lower unit for service and not put it back in neutral before it was put back on. You'll have to drop the unit and move the shift rod manually until the prop spins freely and it's in neutral. Get yourself some muffs and test before you bring it to the lake. While you have it down i'd replace the impeller too. Also, what is the year? Is this an I-6?

Sounds like someone installed the lower unit incorrectly. You need to drop it, adjust the lower shift rod and reinstall the LU.

Remove all the bolts on the lower unit. one in front, two on top of the AV plate, and two under the AV plate. Now remove the zinc anode at the rear bottom of the AV plate. If it is original, a thin wall 1/2" socket wil fit. Under the anode is a hidden bolt.

OK, now turn the lower shift rod CCW until it clicks into neutral. Now set the MerControl to neutral as well. Make sure the black plastic shift shaft guide is installed in the midsection. Now install the gearcase by:

Grease driveshaft and shift shaft splines. Shove gearcase into midsection. Line up copper water tube with white plastic tube guide. When gearcase won't go in any more, turn flywheel with your hand to line up driveshaft splines with crankshaft splines. Now see if shiftshaft splines will mate. If not, have some rock the controller a bit to line them up. Wiggle the gearcase into posiiton. You may use nuts to keep gearcase together, however, only use your fingers to tighten them, or you may ruin crankshaft or driveshaft splines.

its an outboard inline 6 i guess u would call it i dont have the serial number for the year but i think its a late 70's early 80's maybe thats just a guess but dropping the lower unit do u think i should check to see if it shifts manually???? the last owner of the boat said he has never taken the lower unit off and he has owner it since new...... he also said last time he parked it. it shifted perfectly forwards and backwards... do u guys think that the controls or the cable could be messed up.... it does go up in rpms when i put throttle to it but i just dont shift..... and what do i all need for supplies to drop the lower unit.... i would have to do it today and since i live out of town i need to grab all the stuff tonight so i can change it tonight so the wife wont ***** at me that the boat is broken and she can take it camping.....WOW what guys will do so the wife doesn't ***** at them lol

Well he must be full of crap becuase it had to be dropped at one point to replace the impeller(water pump) , the original one would be 25 years old. They should be replaced every 5 years. Pull the unitl down, make sure it's in nutral and reinstall. TEST it before you bring it to the dock. Then we'll go from there. You need to take your time and don't rush, just accept it won't be ready for your trip. There will be other trip!

When you say out of wack, what was wrong with it? With a problem like this9 times of out 10 it will be that the LU was installed w/o being in the correct position.

If you pulled the cables out and shifted manually you're shifting much further than the cables & box were designed to, possibility making up for the LU being out of adjustment. Installing a new set might not solve your problem.(i hope it does) Let us know how it goes.
