My boat won't move

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum and new to owning a boat. Just recently purchased a1987 Cobalt 23 ft bowrider. 350 Mercruiser i/o. Prior to taking it out I changed the oil in the motor and checked the oil in the lower unit all looked well. Today was the fourth time that we have had it out. No problems, until today. We were pulling my daughter on the tube then all of the sudden the engine started revving and we lost forward motion, and I had a little smoke coming from the engine bay. After shutting everything down and inspecting things I restarted the engine. Engine started and seemed to run fine but the boat would not move, had to be towed in.

So what do you experienced boaters think may be the problem?

Thanks for any info.

Sounds like the engine coupler failed. Probably due to the engine being out of alignment. when was it checked last?

That I can't answer Don. I have only owned the boat for about 2 weeks. Is this something that I can check?
