have to keep priming bulb to get going

I have to keep priming the bulb to get the motor to get going, once going it runs great and flys! But it takes me a while to get going after i shut the engine down and then start it again. Anyone have any ideas why? Thanks so much for your reply's. The engine is a 72 mercury 500 50 hp thunderbolt Model 500EL

Sounds like you should change the fuel pump. Easy and cheep. Check the fuel lines for cracks and leaks.
