trying to fix trim gauge

okay so i figured out he reason my trim gauge isnt working is cuase the wires were all dry rotted at connection was broke so i rewired the whole trim system and now i just have one question does ur boat have to be in the water or running on ears for trim gauge to work??

If it's wired properly, the gauge should work when the key is on, but the motor doesn't have to be running. Just turn the key on (don't start the engine) and tilt the engine up and down, the gauge should work.
