I have a 1963 Merc 350 (35hp) It uses 50:1
You might want to check out a web site, I cant remember what it is write off hand. Google Old Mercury or Old Mercury Parts you should find it. They have a ton of stuff for those old Mercs.

the 24:1 is for the break in time and since its a 61 I think it would be safe to say that it is broke in :D. that engine is designed to run at 50:1. i suggest using the good quicksilver stuff especially if your going to run it hard, you can use the cheap tw-c 2-cycle oil but i recently changed to the quicksilver and you can't imagine the difference it runs way smoother even though it costs more it is definantly the way to go

I wouldn't run to rich a mix or your going to start fouling plugs and losing power

Hi,
50-1 TC3 rated oil for your baby will be just fine.
Another up side is you will not foul plugs every few trips out on the water.
