got a 40 evinrude that will go backwards but when you go forward the motor revs up but the prop will not engage, now the prop will barely turn is the linkage off or something?

Electric shift, manual shift, what year and model? Can you give us your model number? Sounds like a lower unit problem but there are other things that can cause problem.

not sure its actually a friend of mines and they are actually on the water now having to go backwards back to the launch, really seein if there is a quick fix on water but i said the same on lower unit he heard somethin pop and the boat stopped, the motor its in the 80's type model but not sure

he said when he puts it in forward something grinds, i am pretty sure that its a gear in the lower unit

its on a pontoon boat, dont think its electric from the look of the motor

Well if you know what to look for, you can tell by looking. Otherwise you are guessing???

"Grinding" suggests it is not electric. But it still isn't good. Figure on emptying some pretty deep pockets.

yeah prob so sad thing is he bought this boat and hasnt got to use it he just got it out of the shop for the carbs for 2nd time the guy is not happy and want be after this news but thanks 4 the info
