1977 mercury 500 50 hp not running full speed at full throttle.

I have a 1977 mercury 500 50 hp 2 stroke. When I first took the boat out it ran like a champ for the two times out (previous owners stepfather than grandfather). Then just last week when I had the boat out I got into it, and the boat was only going half speed and the throttle was maxed out. I then attempted to tight the throttle cable went out today still no improvement. Oh and before this the boat did this same thing so i squeezed the bulb and the boat took off ran like normal. Not for sure what the problem is. Please help thank you.:confused:

i would think fuel related problem if squeezing the bulb helped. i would check fuel pump, clean carbs and change fuel filter.

fuel pump. when mine went out i had to make it back to the dock squeezing the bulb the whole way because it was so bad. same motor. just two years older.

cleaned both carbs but its still doing the same thing i put hand over top carb and it killed the motor put hand over second carb nothing happens so that mine the bottom fuel pump is bad motor still will not go full speed when throttle is maxed out. please help. thank you.
