Replacing Bellows !!! HELP !!!

I recently bought a 1991 mariah diablo with a mercruiser alpha one. while on the water i noticed that the boat was taking on some water. once i got it home i saw some cracks in the bellows. I am mechanically inclined but have never worked on a boat before. to take it somewhere i am looking at an easy $700 bill. Is this a project i can handle and if so i need step by step directions and a list of tools needed. also, i was told that if i do this repair that i should replace the gimble housing and shift cable ? help me out

this YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wB8rMCQeZyk and it's companion (part 2) show the basics, along with the manual you should be able to take care of it. Make sure you check the gimbal bearing and lube the driveshaft u joints while you are at it. You will need an alignment tool (ebay about $40). Good luck.

thanks alot !!! really helpful ! sorry, but what are the drive shaft u joints ? and what exactly is the allignment tool for and how do you use it ?

Talk about the, "Fill in the blanks".:cool:
I would in know way, take my outdrive off following this.;)
I'll leave it to a professional.......:D

Agree it is not perfect (by a long shot) but it does show what you are getting into:D. You do need to follow the manual. The universal joints are on the driveshaft. The manual will tell how to inspect everything as you go along. Alignment tool : http://www.sterndrives.com/engine_alignment.html lots of good stuff on that page. Good luck!

its not rocket science ,if you dont feel you can do it dont stop him from trying,pretty basic stuff, if it had to do with internals thats another story.

I am going to give it a shot. Seems pretty straight forward now that I have researched it. Thanks alot guys, I really appreciate it. I will keep you updated. I will probably ask a few more questions as I undertake this repair.
