ok so i ran the motor for like 2 hours not i got the gas mix at pretty rich with oil like about quart of oil to like 3 gallon of gas i did cause it hasnt ran in a while and i had a little shaving from helicoil go in the 3 cylinder so another reason all good. umm about gallon or less of old gas. now would some old gas and oil make it so it wouldnt idle

i have the low speed needle at 1 turn out both of them i tried 1 1/2 for both it would let me put the warm up lever all the way down and it would idle but its 2 high now i think i got to idle it when the top was 1 out and bottom 1 1/2 and it didnt idle but its not even. also

i could only start when warm when using the choke? whats wrong?

and i found the tele tale kinda but its like drips water and like barely comes out plus when i reved it up and kinda kept it high it would come out ok stream but like onyl did once its not even stream. then exhuast relief is kinda the same.

problem with cooling system? the motor didnt overhear or anything i checked it the whole time so its cooling and strangely for a little bit the third cylinder was hotter then the rest then evened out later

Re: idle and water

oh and compression is good and the mag advances the carbs both against there stops when i use the control box. so its linked and synced?

umm i cleaned the carbs it lean sneezed like once or twice but thats when i had the mixtures to lean when i reved it up.

any thoughts

man this is one loud motor

Re: idle and water

ok i fixed the water problem. i found the pee hole and it i had to put some compressed air up there to clear it out but it didnt it. now pees real good and looks better not overheating so i know its cooling.

about the idle i didnt really do anything 2moro ill adjust the needles again then i think ill have to go and adjust my idle adjustment screw i just tuned the motor not so hard.

lol i think the reason y i didnt get bit by bugs was because the motor put out so much smoke

Re: idle and water

You might tell us what motor you are working on. It sounds like your carbs are dirty. Most Mercs call for initial idle mixture setting is 1-1/2 turns open.

Re: idle and water

even with 1 1/2 open on both it dont start up unless i choke it

weird starts up great with the choke. and the warm up lever up.

i cleaned the carbs already. and rebuilt them i rebuilt the fuel pump and the primer always stays full

its a 1961 merc500

i still dont get the reason y it needs the choke to start up even when warm

got good compression about 130 +-5psi on all four.

got it to start without it then i let it sit and wouldnt do it.
