temperature problem?

ok had the boat out....new impeller...1987 johnson 150....temp went to 3/4 and alarm went off...a minute later the temp dropped and leveled off at 1/2 and alrarm stopped sounding...perfect right? why did it alarm in the first place? why didn the thermostat open earlier?

anyway after about a 10 minute test ride WOT everything is fine....temp stayed at 1/2...after idling for about 10 mins...we go to trailer the boat and the temp goes very high....

any ides? im gonna replace both thermostats and sender to see what happens.
we have a pretty strong stream from the telltale.

any suggestions?

That sounds like a sticking thermostat, replace it.
I have had that problem on cars before. You strt them up as the run they get hotter and hotter, then the t-sat open and the temp drop right down.

It's OK after the temperature drops but the next day when you start her up it happens all over again.

im gonna replace both....what if one opens and one sticks? what would the temp do?
