Shifted in Reverse without running engine

I was out attaching my 1988 15hp. This model has the gear shifter integrated into the twist grip throttle.

I shifted the motor into reverse without the engine running and then tried to shift it back to Neutral and it will not make that shift. Not knowing much about outboards I started seaching the web and I found a reprint of a Mercury manual the states (exact quote)"DO NOT attempt to shift motor into "Reverse" gear when engine is }not running or damage to the shift mechanism could result"

Is there anything I can try to save me a trip to the dealer. Any idea how expensive this little trip will cost me?

Thanks

Re: Shifted in Reverse without running engine

Either a cable popped off inside the handle or something probably broke loose. Have you tried removing the cover on the engine and watching to see if the linkage is trying to move while twisting the grip.
Does the grip turn freely or does it feel stiff? Does the cables seem like they are loose? Try to manually move the linkage to see if its jammed. I have seen the cable pop off the wheel because they were stretched inside the tiller handle at the bend before it turns in the engine.

All of the cables and linkage look good. I just got a posting from another message board and they say to start the motor in Reverse and after the motor is running then shift it into or out of gear. Seems to make sense that I am locked until the motor is running. Will try tonight.

I think you might also be able to do it by turning the prop by hand while trying to shift back to neutral? That might be worth a try if you can't put it in the water.
